Town gas was a fossil fuel, but a processed one. Produced in manufacturing plants by heating coal, it was piped directly to public street lights and to homes equipped with suitable burners. The discovery of natural gas under the North Sea, and the technologies to extract it, meant that Britain's emissions of carbon dioxide went down slightly. Total demand for gas as a fuel continued to rise, and North Sea gas will eventually run out. The exhausted wells may become storage for sequestered atmospheric carbon.
R T Roussel was an extremely skilled diorama maker, much of whose surviving work is in the Science Museum's collections. The models he and his studio made for the Children's Gallery in the early 1930s had a dramatic effect on the presentation of science and technology to children.
