Tail warning radar, type ARI 5952, for Avro Vulcan bomber, 1965

The V-bomber force was continually updated to remain credible as a deterrent. This radar was carried by Vulcan bombers to warn of enemy fighters approaching from the rear. It used closely-packed components at a time when such miniaturization was very hard to achieve.

[edit] How it works

RADAR is short for RAdio Direction And Ranging. This technology was developed in the Second World War. Radio signals are sent out from the transmitter and any signals which bounce off objects can be detected. With proper equipment, this allows the operator to tell where an object is, how big it is and how fast it is moving.
