Painting by Gilbert Daykin, 1886-1939. "The Tub: At the end of the coalface", 1934. Oil on canvas; 50x60cm, in frame 62.5x73x7.5cm. Gilbert Daykin was himself a working miner, and a series of his paintings in the collection brings home the dangers mining presents to the workforce. Here, two miners work in a confined space, probably at the end of the excavated gallery.
