The whale is the largest marine mammal. Some species have been hunted nearly to extinction. It is an indicator of the health of the food web of the seas.
Some whales don't have teeth: these, technically called "Mysticeti", are commonly referred to as "true whales", and feed on plancton, which is composed of small floating organisms. The blue whale, the largest animal ever, is one of these.
Other whales have teeth: these are called "Odontoceti", simply "whales with teeth", and include the Sperm Whale, the largest living animal with teeth, and the animal with the largest brain. These are, like humans, top predators in the food web.
