In the 1860s, Tyndall realised that slight changes in the composition of the atmosphere could bring about variations in climate. His main interest was water vapour and its impact on radiation, but he also studied the behaviours of other greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, and speculated that atmospheric warming could be affected by human activity.
