Williamson amplifier, home-constructed, c.1949

The development in the mid-1940s of ‘full frequency range recording’ by Arthur Haddy of the Decca Record Co. led to greater interest in improved reproduction. D T N Williamson of GEC designed a high-quality amplifier in 1945–46 with impressive performance. The design was published in the magazine Wireless World during 1947 and caused a sensation. Despite its advanced specification, a skilled amateur could build the amplifier at low cost by purchasing the components separately.

[edit] How it works

The amplifier takes the small electrical input signal and outputs a similar but much larger signal which can be used to drive loudspeakers.
